DVD No Mercy
No Brains is more like it. Richard Gere stars in this slick action thriller as your basic tough-but-dedicated cop who goes to New Orleans to avenge the death of his partner. On the way, he becomes involved with an illiterate Cajun beauty (Kim Basinger in the kind of role that unkind critics would call her typecast in before Ready to Wear and, of course, L.A. Confidential) who's the property of a ruthless killer. It's paint-by-numbers nonsense with lines (such as "we come from a society where it is very pleasurable to be a man") that play as high camp--unfortunately, that's not intended. Gere and Basinger's relationship--they'd try again, equally unconvincingly, with Final Analysis--is patently silly. They spend the first half of the movie exchanging hilariously sultry meaningful glances, until they're on the lam together, where the burning question is which actor's hair will be more stylishly mussed. --David Kronke
Richard Gere is the tough Chicago cop who goes to the Big Easy to track down the killer of his partner. This killer is a much feared hood in New Orleans named Losado. While down there Gere runs into Kim Basinger, a "slave" of Losado's, and he becomes determined to free her as well as kill Losado. This is all very typical thriller fare, although it can be pretty suspenseful at times--especially in the bayous and, of course, the big ending where Gere gets his man in a nail-biting shoot out and fire. But after you've seen this, ask yourself the next day how much you can remember. Note: There's a scene in the picture that's stolen directly from Hitchcock's "The 39 Steps": Gere and Basinger are handcuffed together as they make their escape through the swamps.
"I keeled yore freend...Eh-dee."
In the very small "Chicago cop livestock crawl swamp swimming crawfish headsucking revenge" genre this is by far the best of all time! haw haw
Richard Gere plays Chicago undercover dick Eddie Jillette who, along with his partner, were unwittingly being hired by Kim Basinger's rich New Orleans boyfriend to kill this really bad meanie Losado, played by the ultra-unlikable Jeroen Krabbe, who we find later has "owned" Kim since she was like 12 years old. Unfortunately, Losado gets wise to the deal and follows Kim to Chicago where death and mayhem ensue, particularly to Jillete's partner who was "guh-tted like a peeg."
Well, Gere goes down to New Orleans looking for clues to his partner's killer with predictable results. In the process, William Atherton the brother of dead murdered and killed boyfriend shows off his wimpy backhand, and then gets threatened and carwrecked by Jillette, probably because he was such a jerk in Die Hard. Anyway, because he's a Yankee and a lot smarter than us Southerners (yuk yuk) he only needs about 10 minutes to find Kim (Mee-chelle) in a club on the wrong side of the river in Algiers, a town highly reminiscent of Hell if you've ever been down there too. Now here's the good part.....Kim Basinger on the dance floor grooving to some kind of hybrid Cajun island funk, and I mean she is throwing down! Hair, boobs, lips...your basic winner of the Nordic Combined. And then she goes in the ladies room and DOUSES HERSELF WITH WATER TO COOL DOWN! Hey, somebody DOUSE ME TOO! OK, have you hit the "Add to Cart" button yet?
The rest of the movie is pretty silly but as romantic thrillers go, Gere and Basinger set the bar pretty high. They have terrific chemistry and that alone will keep you interested until the final showdown between Jillette and Losado to decide who gets title to the beautimous Mee-chelle.
The DVD has both Widescreen and Standard with 2 channel Dolby. No other extras but the transfer is actually pretty good. A Top 10 datenight movie. 4 Po-boys
Grade F+
A cop's partner is killed, and poor Richard feels he has to go and take care of the bad guy that did it. Richard's wife has left him and he now is divorced, so Kim, who is a white slave of the bad guy, ads more reason for Richard to go after the bad guy. Besides, Kim was there when Richard's partner was done in. THE GOOD Not much, Kim Bassinger is pretty to look at, and that is about it. THE BAD Richard and Kim along with rest of the cast, seem to be going thru the motions of acting. Richard has the same blank stare that he has in most of his moves. Living close to New Orleans, they did not take advantage of the local landscape. This movie could have been filmed anywhere. They do not know how to eat Crawfish in the movie, a southern treat. The Final fight scene is poorly shot. C.P.O.V The F word is used alot, along with other foul language. Kim's breast are shown thru her wet shirt as she poors water down blouse to cool off. The killings are pretty bloodless, compared to today's standards. Not a lot of killings in this movie anyway.-EJW
This film, which again pairs Richard Gere and Kim Basinger (who starred in 1986's No Mercy), offers up elements of classic noir: a hapless man becomes intimately involved with a beautiful blonde who may or may not be who or what she appears to be. Dedicated psychiatrist Isaac Barr (Gere) reluctantly, and then more obsessively, becomes involved with Heather Evans (Basinger), the sister of his patient, Diana Baylor (Uma Thurman). Evans is unhappily married to a gangster (appropriately played by a muscular and menacing Eric Roberts in a trademark role). Gere and Basinger make a credible, if dangerous couple, and Thurman delivers a subtle, understated performance and demonstrates her range and potential.
I saw this movie years ago, but decided to buy it. I must say Richard Gere did an outstanding job playing a villan. Again, Mr. Gere has demonstrated that he is versatile, and can play a varirty of roles. Great performances by Andy Garcia and Steven Baldwin as well. The temptation here is to make a joke about Intersection and dead ends--but this disappointing film has too much talent involved to kid about how wrong it went. Based on the French film Les Choses de la Vie, the film was adapted by the usually reliable Marshall Brickman (Annie Hall) and David Rayfiel (The Firm). Richard Gere plays a man caught between two women: his chilly, remote wife (Sharon Stone) and his vibrant young mistress (Lolita Davidovich). How the marriage declined, how the affair began, and how the two women's paths eventually cross--everything is seen in flashback after Gere's car spins out of control in a horrible accident. Director Mark Rydell has some of the squarest dialogue in recent movie history to work with, as he dissects how... Clever twists and a bona fide surprise ending make this an above-average courtroom thriller, tapping into the post-O.J. scrutiny of our legal system in the case of a hotshot Chicago defense attorney (Richard Gere) whose latest client is an altar boy (Edward Norton) accused of murdering a Catholic archbishop. The film uses its own manipulation to tell a story about manipulation, and when we finally discover who's been pulling the strings, the payoff is both convincing and pertinent to the ongoing debate over what constitutes truth in the American system of justice. Making an impressive screen debut that has since led to a stellar career, Norton gives a performance that rides on a razor's edge of schizophrenic pathology--his role is an actor's showcase, and without crossing over the line of... Reviewer Gary F. Taylor who states that Jim McBride does not know what statement he is trying to make is totally off the mark.
McBride's message is loud and clear and demonstrated throughout the entire movie. And the movie is far from pretentious. Jesse is a simple character who has an "all or nothing" approach to life and believes that "love is the power supreme." In that vein he risks everything to win the heart of Monica.
I definitely understand why some find the movie cheesy but for me, the soundtrack, the relentlessness of Jesse in pursuing Monica, the LA scenery, the Silver Surfer references, and even the cheesy clothing all just work.
This isn't a movie about a character who deserves happiness (ie. Sleepless in Seattle--yuk); Jesse is a criminal who should be... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Richard Gere - Valérie Kaprisky Director(s): Jim McBride DVD Release Date: Released the 15 May 2001 Usually ships in 24 hours
